The home of James Rosenquist, the noted Pop artist who passed away last year at age 83, has been listed for sale through Sotheby’s for $14.5 million. The townhouse in the Lower Manhattan neighborhood of TriBeCa comes with five bedrooms, six-and-a-half bathrooms, and all the spirit of Pop art that money can buy. Rosenquist purchased the 10,020-square-foot building at 162 Chambers Street in 1977 for $120,000, according to his New York Times obituary. He converted the first floor into his full-time studio space. The artist and his family used the other four floors as living quarters, along with a basement for storage space and a rooftop terrace.
Today, the building is listed as a three-family building with potential for conversion into mixed-use development or condominiums. But in browsing through photos as the building was used by Rosenquist, it’s nice to daydream of a Manhattan where artists could occupy a spacious, light-filled live/work space in the thick of downtown.
