Casey Nisely is an artist who resides in the rich, lush parish of Saint Ann in Jamaica, West Indies. She learned how to carve and work with wood from her father Gilbert Nicely who is of international acclaim. Just as in Africa, there are many families in Jamaica who work together. The Nicely family is an example of this continuity that survived the African Holocaust of Enslavement. The piece that she carved can be seen in this video. It is made from the Jamaican hard wood Gwango. The piece is entitled “Limbo” which is an African dance and music which roots are said to come from Africa and can be found in many Caribbean Islands.
