In conjunction with the commemoration of the eighth anniversary of the federal flood following Hurricane Katrina, the Tekrema Center for Arts and Culture will present an art exhibition, for one night only, on August 28, 2013. The event will take place from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. and will feature paintings by Ted Ellis and photographs by Joseph Crachiola, with live jazz from 7:00-9:00 p.m. by Music + 1. Tekrema Dance Theater will perform excerpts from a new work honoring The Civil Right Era, featuring the poetry of Langston Hughes and music of Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington’s from the album My People.

The Tekrema Center is located at 5640 Burgundy, in New Orleans’ historic Holy Cross neighborhood.

Mr. Ellis is a self taught artist and a native New Orleanian who currently lives in Friendswood, Texas. He has been recognized as one of the most celebrated artists of the 21st century. Of his work he says, ” I paint subjects that are representative of the many facets of American life as I know it. I like to think of myself as a creative historian. I was put here to record history…all aspects of American culture and heritage. My sole purpose has always been to educate through my art.”

Mr. Crachiola is a native of Detroit, Michigan where he had a career in photography that spanned nearly forty years. In 2009 he relocated to New Orleans where he works from his home studio in the historic Holy Cross neighborhood. His photographs have been exhibited in a number of galleries, including the Cranbrook Art Museum (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan), Swords Into Plowshares Peace Center (Detroit) and others. His photographs are included in the permanent collections of the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Kresge Museum at Michigan State University, and the Detroit Institute of Arts.
