Beautiful Riga, Latvia.

KSENIJA VINOGRADOVA/WIKIMEDIA

The first Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Latvia is titled ”Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More,” which happens to be the name of a relatively high-ABV imperial stout made by Threes Brewery in Brooklyn, so it is already shaping up to be a pretty good affair. But this morning the organization released its artist list, and that, too, looks promising—it has 99 entries, ten of which are collectives, with big names like Lynn Hershman Leeson, Jonas Mekas, Mark Dion, and Raoul Vaneigem (yes, the Situationist theorist!) alongside quite a few lesser-known ones.

RIBOCA noted in a news release that 70 percent of the artists on the list (which follows in full below) hail from the general Baltic region, with a third come from the Baltic countries, and that about half of the 113 works on view in nine venues will be new commissions (denoted by an asterisk). The show runs June 2 through October 28, and Katerina Gregos is handling curatorial duties. Her title is borrowed from the name of anthropologist Alexei Yurchak’s 2005 book about life in the Soviet Union.
