For seven decades, Harriet Tyler worked to preserve and document the history of African Americans in Orange County.
Her contributions have been recognized with honors from the city of Santa Ana as well as the state. Her personal collections are preserved at the Orange County Heritage Museum in Santa Ana and are shared through programs she started and especially during Black History Month, museum officials said.
Tyler died at her daughter’s home in Riverside on June 10 at the age of 91.
“We’re extremely grateful to have known Harriet, and her contributions to the black community will never be forgotten,” said Kevin Cabrera, executive director of the Orange County Heritage Museum and a personal friend of Tyler. “We will continue to preserve her legacy as much as we can, and the institution will carry on her mission to teach the community about black history.”
