On Monday night, as rain poured down on Basel, Switzerland, Gagosian held a lively opening for “Continuing Abstraction,” a pop-up exhibition timed to the Art Basel fair with works by artists like Jackson Pollock, Agnes Martin, Theaster Gates, Willem de Kooning, Mary Weatherford, André Cadere, and more.
But while that show has been marketed as a seven-day, one-off affair, the location it calls home is set to become a permanent Gagosian gallery—the 17th in its vast empire. Situated at Rheinsprung 1, a stone’s throw from the river Rhine in Basel’s Old Town, it will be Gagosian’s second gallery in Switzerland—after a Geneva branch opened in 2010—and its ninth in Europe.
Details of upcoming shows at the Basel space are yet to be announced, and “Continuing Abstraction” is still slated to close on Sunday.
For those keeping score, 17 puts Gagosian far ahead of its rivals in terms of gallery count. Pace currently has 10 locations, Hauser & Wirth has nine (with three addresses in Switzerland), and David Zwirner has five.
With the addition of Basel, Gagosian now has galleries in 10 cities—five galleries in New York (not counting its luxe bookshop on the Upper East Side), three in London, two in and around Paris, and one each in Rome, Athens, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Geneva, and Basel.
The news means that there are now more countries with more than one Gagosian (four) than there are countries with just one Gagosian (three).
