Dallas Contemporary in Texas has brought on Laurie Ann Farrell as senior curator. She fills a position once held by Justine Ludwig, who left her job as chief curator and deputy director of the art space last year to become director of Creative Time in New York.

Farrell, who begins at Dallas Contemporary on April 1, is currently the Detroit Institute of Arts’s curator of contemporary art and the head of its modern and contemporary art department. She was hired by the department in 2016 alongside Lucy Mensah and Taylor Renee Aldridge (who has contributed to ARTnews) in an attempt to rebrand the museum’s contemporary programming.

Prior to working at the DIA, Farrell had been the executive director of the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia from 2007 to 2016 and, before that, a curator at the Museum for African American Art in New York from 1999 to 2007.

“Dallas Contemporary is the region’s inspired hub for art of our time,” Farrell said in a statement. “Having spent early formative years of my life in Dallas, I couldn’t be happier to return and be a part of the generative cultural imagination of Dallas Contemporary.”
