ESPN will exclusively air the College Football Playoff Semifinals and the College Football Playoff National Championship for the fifth time in the five years of the new system highlighting a bowl season featuring the entire New Year’s Six and a 35-game bowl slate. The robust postseason slate contributes to an industry-leading season where ESPN carried more than 1,000 college football games on its platforms.
College Football Playoff Semifinals: No. 2 Clemson vs. No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 4 Oklahoma
The College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, featuring No. 2 Clemson vs. No. 3 Notre Dame (4 p.m. ET), and the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl between No. 1 Alabama and No. 4 Oklahoma (8 p.m.) will both be played on ESPN Saturday, Dec. 29, the first year under an adjusted schedule adopted by the College Football Playoff organization. The winners will play in the College Football Playoff National Championship Presented by AT&T on Monday, January 7.
Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit Call CFP Semifinal at Capital One Orange Bowl; Laura Rutledge Reports on Sooners; Maria Taylor on Alabama
Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit will call the CFP Semifinal at the Orange Bowl, the duo’s fifth semifinal together and the only play-by-play commentator and analyst to call a CFP Semifinal in each of the five years of the system. Laura Rutledge and Maria Taylor will be the reporters, with Rutledge assigned to the Sooners and Taylor to the Crimson Tide. For the versatile commentators, it is their second consecutive year working a CFP Semifinal.
Sean McDonough Makes CFP Semifinal Debut at Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic; Blackledge is Analyst, Rinaldi and Rowe Reporters for Fifth CFP Semifinal
Sean McDonough makes his College Football Playoff debut when the accomplished broadcaster calls the CFP Semifinal at the Cotton Bowl Classic, joining Todd Blackledge in the booth. Veteran reporters Holly Rowe and Tom Rinaldi will report from Arlington; the duo, along with Blackledge, join Fowler and Herbstreit in working a CFP Semifinal for the fifth consecutive year. Rowe will be assigned to the Tigers and Rinaldi to the Fighting Irish.
New Year’s Day Features Tripleheader of New Year’s Six Games; Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Precedes CFP Semifinals
ESPN’s College Football Playoff coverage includes every game of the New Year’s Six, the CFP Semifinals plus four additional premier bowl games – the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl (1 p.m.), The Rose Bowl Game Presented by Northwestern Mutual (5 p.m.) and the Allstate Sugar Bowl (8:45 p.m.) on New Year’s Day, as well as Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl (noon) on Dec. 29, preceding the College Football Playoff Semifinals.
Traditional Conference Matchups Headline Rose Bowl Game Presented by Northwestern Mutual and Allstate Sugar Bowl; UCF Looks to Extend Nation’s Longest Winning Streak and LSU Makes New Year’s Six Debut in PlayStation Fiesta Bowl
The Fiesta Bowl features No. 11 LSU vs. No. 8 UCF, as the Knights participate in their second consecutive New Year’s Six game and look to extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 26 games. LSU is participating in its first New Year’s Six game. The Rose Bowl Game features the traditional matchup of the Pac-12 Champion vs. the Big Ten Champion, as No. 9 Washington plays No. 6 Ohio State. It is the Huskies first trip to Pasadena since 2001 and the Buckeyes first since 2011. The Sugar Bowl will conclude New Year’s Six as No. 15 Texas plays No. 5 Georgia, in a traditional Big 12-SEC matchup.
The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Features Rematch of 2017 Season Opener: No. 10 Florida vs. No. 7 Michigan
The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, which precedes the College Football Playoff semifinals, will see No. 10 Florida vs. No. 7 Michigan match up for the second straight season, as the teams kicked off the 2017 season with the Wolverines coming out on top of the Gators, 33-17. The last bowl game between these teams was 2015, when Michigan beat Florida in the Citrus Bowl, 41-7.
