COURTESY LUNDER INSTITUTE

Lee Glazer, who is currently curator for American art at the Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, has been picked to be the founding director of the Lunder Institute for American Art at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

The Lunder Institute, a research center for American art about 75 miles north of Portland, was founded last year after collectors Peter and Paula Lunder donated more than 1,100 works valued at more than $100 million to Colby. Earlier this month, the Institute tapped Theaster Gates to be its distinguished visiting artist and director of artist initiatives.

In a statement, Glazer said a focus on research, teaching, and learning in support of the Institute’s collection of American art will be “coequal and mutually reinforcing. I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to shape the future of this unique endeavor made possible by Peter and Paula Lunder.”
