The ups-and-downs faced by the couple were no secret. Offset has fought to keep their marriage going through numerous cheating allegations. The Migos member even showed-up during his future ex-wife’s 2018 Rolling Loud performances publicly asking her to take him back.

In the article that accompanies Cardi’s Elle magazine for the September 2020 issue, she explained how the chaotic romance influenced her upcoming album.

“My music is always going to make a woman feel like a bad bitch. When you make a woman feel like she’s the baddest bitch in the room, to me, that’s female empowerment,” she said to Elle. “But this album is going to be really different. Of course, it’s going to have my Lemonade moments, my personal relationship moments.”
