The Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York has announced that Larry Ossei-Mensah, the recently named senior curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, will serve as guest curator for its first dedicated exhibition space for visual art, the Rudin Family Gallery, which is slated to open in October. Ossei-Mensah will work with BAM artistic director David Binder in organizing shows and events.
The 1,100-square-foot gallery, which is named for the family of donor and BAM trustee Beth Rudin DeWoody—an ARTnews Top 200 collector—will be situated in a new one-story structure in a formerly empty lot at 623 Fulton Street in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood. As part of the BAM Strong expansion, the exhibition space will connect to the outer lobby of the Harvey Theater, which is being renovated. The updated theater will include an elevator to its balcony level, an open staircase between floors, a new patron lounge, and a second story sculpture terrace.
On the ground level, a canopy will unite BAM’s Fulton Street sites: the Harvey Theater, the Rudin Family Gallery, and the first floor of the residential building at 230 Ashland Place. BAM has not made known its plans for its space in 230 Ashland Place, which it purchased in 2010.
Katy Clark, president of BAM, said in a statement, “This project provides our campus with dynamic improvements and additions while greatly increasing accessibility for all our visitors.”
Adam E. Max, the arts center’s board chair, added, “We are thrilled that the project will provide our always adventurous institution with new opportunities—from visual art programming, to easier access to affordable seats, to new spaces for our audiences to gather.”
