National Baseball Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., one of the most popular Major League Baseball stars ever, will join ESPN’s broadcast booth as a guest analyst on Monday, August 26. “Junior” will call the New York Yankees at Seattle Mariners game as part of ESPN’s Monday Night Baseball telecast presented by USAA at 10 p.m. ET.
Griffey, Jr. will call the action with his childhood friend and ESPN analyst Eduardo Perez, as well as play-by-play commentator Dave Flemming. Griffey, Jr. and Perez are famously the sons of iconic Cincinnati Reds “Big Red Machine” teammates and Hall of Famers Ken Griffey and Tony Perez, respectively. Griffey, Jr. played 13 seasons with the Mariners, including his first 11 as a big leaguer.
Monday’s game marks the second of the season that Griffey, Jr. has called as a guest analyst for ESPN. He also contributed to ESPN’s coverage of the Japan Opening Series in March, which featured the Mariners. Monday’s Yankees vs. Mariners telecast will also be available to stream via the ESPN App. The telecast will be subject to local blackout restrictions in the New York market.
Griffey Jr. amassed 630 home runs during his 22-year playing career and is considered to be one of the greatest players of all time. He was a 13-time All-Star, 10-time Gold Glove Award-winner and American League M.V.P. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016. Griffey Jr. is also a member of both the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame and the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame.
Griffey Jr. has appeared as a guest on various ESPN platforms, including on ESPN’s College Gameday in 2014. He also served as an ESPN Images photographer documenting ESPN’s Monday Night Football and the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series Firestone Grand Prix, among other assignments.
