The opening of the 2019 Venice Biennale is only about a year and two months away—it will be here before we know it—and countries are beginning to reveal the artists and curators they have tapped to represent them at the grand event. One of the first out of the gate is Australia, announcing today that artist Angelica Mesiti will present the exhibition at its pavilion, and that Juliana Engberg will serve as curator.
Mesiti is best-known for large-scale video works that, as the Australians put it in their news release, “explore deeply personal stories of the individual and the collective, grappling with the complex dimensions of human experience.” She has shown widely Down Under and appeared in major international exhibitions, like the 2013 Istanbul Biennial, the 2013 Sharjah Biennale, and the 2012 Kochi-Mizuris Biennale in India.
Engberg, for her part, is a veteran curator who curated the 2014 Biennale of Sydney, which included Mesiti. She currently serves as program director for the European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017 in Denmark, and has, in the past, been artistic director of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, the 1999 Melbourne International Biennial: Signs of Life, and the 1998 Adelaide Biennial.
“It’s such a huge honor that I’m very grateful to accept,” Mesiti said in a statement. “I’d like to say a big thank you to the selection panel for their faith in my practice and recognition of my work. I’m excited to be working with the brilliant Juliana Engberg as curator; someone whose intelligence and integrity I admire. With her depth of experience, humor and passion I feel assured of a wonderful partnership.”
