To celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, Art Basel will commission artists to create “interventions around the topic of the fair as a marketplace and as a historical site for exchange, trade, and competition, addressing the production, circulation, mediation, and consumption of contemporary art in a global world.”

The intercontinental project will take form across all three Art Basel fairs—in Basel, Switzerland, Hong Kong, and Miami Beach—-under the direction of Berlin-based Kasper König and two other curators. König will lead the project in Basel, while Hong Kong will go to Christina Li (curator of Hong Kong’s forthcoming presentation at the Venice Biennale) and Miami to Hamza Walker (executive director of LAXART in Los Angeles.)

Commissions for the project will roll out over the next several months to both international artists and those local to the respective cities, and the programming will be officially announced this fall.
