Last summer brought news that the New Art Dealers Alliance was canceling the 2019 edition of its New York fair, which typically runs during Armory Week in March. Now the organization has revealed its plans for what will replace that fair this year: an event called “New York Gallery Open,” which aims to bring attendees to galleries themselves.

From March 4 to 10, around 50 galleries will offer their wares at various locations around New York. The majority of the participants already have permanent locations in New York—Company Gallery, Foxy Production, Derek Eller Gallery, and Simone Subal Gallery are among those based in the city who will take part.

But some out-of-town dealers will also open pop-ups or share their space with New York galleries. Patron Gallery, from Chicago, will set up shop on Canal Street, while the newly opened Jack Barrett Gallery will host presentations from Good Weather gallery (of North Little Rock, Arkansas), Sans Titre (of Paris), and others.

Heather Hubbs, the executive director of NADA, said, “In some ways, New York functions like a year-round art fair. Galleries host exhibitions which are open and accessible to the public all year. With the New York Gallery Open, we’re placing the focus on gallery exhibitions in their spaces across the city during the March Art Week. It’s in these essential places where galleries develop their programs.”

According to a representative for the fair, participating spaces must pay a “small fee for galleries . . . that helps to cover administrative costs.”
