49ers Apologize After Leaving Kaepernick Out of Greatest Memories Tribute

The San Francisco 49ers issued a statement to the media over the weekend, apologizing for omitting Colin Kaepernick from a photo gallery recently posted on the team’s website that was intended to showcase the 49ers’ greatest moments made against the rival Green Bay Packers.

According to reports, the 49ers’ official website posted a collection of 48 photos last Friday that highlighted the best moments of its all-time series with Green Bay.

The only problem was none of the photos published featured Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick is probably best known now for his role as a civil rights activist and the originator of NFL players kneeling during the playing of the National Anthem as a way of peaceful protest against police brutality and racism in the U.S. But before taking a knee, Kaepernick was once considered one of the top players in the league, having led the 49ers to a Super Bowl in just his second season.

Some of the 49ers’s best games played against the Packers came with Kaepernick at quarterback – he set an all-time league record in a playoff game against Green Bay during the 2012-‘13 season, rushing for 181 yards, the most yards run by any NFL quarterback in a single game. San Francisco went on to win that game, 45-31. The following year, he put up more than 400 yards of offense against the Packers in the season opener, then beat them in the playoffs, again, later that postseason.

The 49ers media relations department issued a statement, acknowledging Kaepernick’s absence from the photo collection was a mistake.

“Unfortunately there were a handful of obvious misses in this gallery posted by our website team and we appreciate them being brought to our attention,” the 49ers said in its statement. They also added photos of Kaepernick to the collection. “The 49ers organization has tremendous respect and gratitude for the contributions Colin made to our team over the years. We have fond memories of those games and that should have been displayed on our website. This oversight does not properly reflect the appreciation our ownership and this team have for Colin.”
